Cancer researchers at the University of Huddersfield are developing a new form of treatment specifically for young people, based on a molecule named CD40, which destroys cancerous tumours without harming healthy cell tissue.
The University's Dr Nik Georgopoulos who leads the research says
"We have discovered that a protein, known as CD40, found on the surface of human cells can be ‘activated’ to kill cancerous cells without harming healthy cell tissue.
Chemotherapy and radiotherapy usually have side effects and healthy cells are destroyed along with cancerous cells, whereas CD40 only impacts on cancer cells.
The Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust have pledged their ongoing support and funding which so far has allowed cancer researchers at The University of Huddersfield to test for the first time, how CD40 can kill tumour cells from cancers that mainly affect young people.
The aim is to use the knowledge generated from this work to design new and effective treatments for cancers affecting young patients in the near future."
It is truly ground-breaking for cancer research and future cancer treatments.
In order to continue this vital work, we need to raise more funds for The Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust who have seen a decrease in income due to the lack of events through the Coronavirus outbreak.
Please donate if you can and stock the shelves up with equipment and medicine in our cancer research lab.
