Here are examples of the ways we help those in need (names have been changed to protect the identity of our clients):
“Robert”, 85, has lived alone for many years in a house that was falling into disrepair. His health has been failing and he is inclined to give his limited income away to anyone who asks. He has outlived his family and has no close friends to provide assistance. Robert came to our program after a referral from a hospital Social Worker after he suffered a heart attack. While he was hospitalized, his doctors diagnosed dementia and other serious health conditions that required medication and daily care. His health care team determined that he was unable to return to his home and care for himself. Senior Citizens Council was able to step in and assist him to move to a safe living situation, protect his limited finances and engage with his doctors to ensure he was receiving the care he needs.
“June”, 72, lives on her own and is estranged from her family. While she can manage most of her daily needs, June really needs assistance handling her monthly benefits and expenses. June was referred to Senior Citizens Council by her local Community Center where she goes to lunch regularly, We assist her in paying her bills on time, insurance paperwork, helps her to read and understand her mail and ensures that she has an adequate supply of food. We also provide her with personal contact on a regular basis and partner with the Community Center to assist her in finding community activities to combat loneliness.
