Mayhew has been a lifeline for the homeless and rough sleepers since 2000.
“The Homeless
A dog is often a homeless person’s only companion, but the added expense of vet and food bills puts an extra burden on people who are already in a vulnerable situation. Our Animal Welfare Officers regularly visit the homeless and their dogs at centres and on the streets, where they build close and trusted relationships with them and provide free general health checks and microchipping.
We visit 15 homeless centres such as Thames Reach, Spitalfields Crypt Trust, The Salvation Army, St Mungo’s, Crisis, and Broadway Homeless Hostel and Drop in Centre.
TheraPaws from Mayhew
Our volunteers take their behaviourally assessed dogs into hospitals, mental health centres, SEN schools, care homes and hospices to help improve the quality of life for those interacting with the animal. We work with people of all ages and all boroughs across London. This currently being done through virtual consultations.
Specialising in three types of animal assisted interventions, our TheraPaws volunteers and their dogs are involved in animal assisted activities (AAA), animal assisted therapy (AAT) and animal assisted education (AAE).”

More than a rehoming centre, Mayhew delivers a wide range of community based programmes focusing on preventative work, education and support to improve animal welfare both in the UK and overseas with Mayhew International.
