Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)
Let's start with some good news...
If Visufund is the only way you collect online charitable donations, you don't need to read this article. We are 100% ready for Strong Customer Authentication, which means you are too.
However, if you collect online payments or donations through your website or any other platforms, you may need to take action. Here's what you need to know.
What is Strong Customer Authentication?
As part of PSD2 regulation in Europe, Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is a new rule coming into effect on 14 September 2019, which will require changes to how European customers authenticate online payments. This will help to reduce fraud and make online payments more secure.
SCA is an additional required step in the checkout flow when a person makes a payment online. SCA requires at least two of the following:
- Something the customer knows: The customer could be prompted to enter a password or pin number
- Something the customer has: This could be a phone or hardware token
- Something the customer is: This could require fingerprint or facial recognition technology (available on many modern smartphones and devices)
From 14 September 2019, banks may decline any payments that require SCA and do not meet this criteria.
When is SCA required?
SCA will apply to all online payments initiated by a customer within Europe, from 14 September 2019.
It may not always be required on low-risk payments, recurring or subscription payments, or transactions below €30 (around £26). However, banks may request SCA to be performed on any transaction, so it's important to be prepared.
Next steps and how to prepare
As we mentioned above, Visufund is ready for SCA so you don't need to take any further action. As we use Stripe to process donations, we have recently upgraded to their new checkout, which means we are fully prepared in advance of the September deadline. This also means we're now able to accept payments using digital wallets, such as Apple Pay.
As part of this improved Checkout, you can now optionally add your logo to the Stripe Checkout form to enhance the donation experience. This will only take a minute and there's some advice here on how to do it: Stripe Checkout Branding
If you work with any other platforms or payment processors, we advise you to check with them directly to ensure they are ready for the SCA deadline.
